‘I worked for Prince Andrew – he called us buffoons if job took too long’ | Royal | News
Prince Andrew reportedly shouted “f***ing buffoons” at royal protection officers for being too slow opening the gates for him.
This is according to Paul Page, who provided armed protection to the Queen, Prince Phillip and Prince Andrew from 1998 to 2004.
These comments about the man formerly known as the Duke of York re-emerged after 60 Minutes Australia re-shared an interview they did with Page three years ago.
During it, Page was asked if the royals were easy to deal with, and he replied to say that Prince Philip could be “tetchy”, the Queen was “wonderful, very polite, and respectful”, before adding: “Unfortunately, Prince Andrew was totally different.”
Page, who served six years at Buckingham Palace where Andrew previously had his own rooms, claimed he could “fly off the handle at the smallest thing” during his time there.
Providing further insight, he said: “For example, if the officers on the gate, because sometimes they are dealing with things, they are dealing with guests, and he suddenly turns up, usually we would get a notice from his protection officer in the car who was with him that they are coming in.
“Sometimes it would be a case of we haven’t got the gates open quick enough, so if he has to slow down for a small minute he would shout out the window – ‘you f***ing buffoons’ and stuff like that.
“There was no leeway, if it wasn’t done right for him, then he would fly off the handle.”
Page also starred in a recent Channel 5 documentary where he claimed Andrew called one staff member a “fat lardy a***hole”.
The former officer had his own controversy in 2009 when he served jail time for his involvement in a property scam where he tricked people into giving him money.
He later appeared in an ITV documentary with Ranvir Singh in 2022 called Prince Andrew, Ghislaine and the Paedophile. During it, he famously spoke about Andrew’s tantrums and his “huge collection of teddy bears”.
Andrew, meanwhile, has been dealing with his own issues after releasing a statement to say he would no longer use his titles because of fresh allegations against him.
He had already lost his royal patronages and military titles in 2022 around a legal dispute with Virginia Giuffre, who died in April this year.
She had claimed notorious paedophile Jeffrey Epstein forced her to engage in sexual activities with Andrew on three separate occasions when she was 17, something he has always denied.
Andrew, who also stepped back from public duties and no longer performs official royal engagements, reached an out-of-court settlement with Virginia, which did not constitute an admission of guilt, and he accepted no liability.
Following his title revocation last week, he stated: “In discussion with the King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.
“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.
“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
Buckingham Palace opted not to comment in relation to claims made in this story.
