‘I’m backing 18/1 and 25/1 shots to win – my Day One Royal Ascot tips | Racing | Sport
Royal Ascot has arrived, and what a week we have to look forward to. As ever, each day is packed full of enthralling races, and day one is jam-packed full of exciting action for punters to get their teeth into.
Here are my tips for the card…
14.30 – Queen Anne Stakes
ROSALLION (11/4) is backed to get favourite backers off on the front foot at the Royal meeting. The four-year-old’s run in the Lockinge should put him spot on for this outing, and if he is able to find the same speed that he showed as a three-year-old then he could be very hard to beat.
15.05 – Coventry Stakes
Twenty-one runners are set to go to post in the second race of the day, and it looks an incredibly competitive affair. Favourite POSTMODERN (4/1) has claims that are simply too good to ignore though, and he should improve further following his five-length win at Yarmouth on debut against what looks like could be a good field.
15.40 – King Charles III Stakes
STARLUST (14/1) catches the eye. He impressed when winning the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint last year and has plenty of good form in the book, saving his best performances for the big days. The four-year-old looked like he needed the run at Haydock and Ralph Beckett will have him ready for this.
16.20 – St James’s Palace Stakes
What a race this promises to be. The battle of the 2000 Guineas winners. I’m backing FIELD OF GOLD (5/6) to get his revenge on Ruling Court following his agonising defeat at Newmarket, in what was a ride which ultimately cost jockey Kieran Shoemark his job at the Gosdens yard. Henri Matisse is such a consistent type and he can chase the selection home.
17.00 – Ascot Stakes
Joseph O’Brien can’t go to a big meeting without landing at least one significant prize nowadays, and COMFORT ZONE (25/1) has a fair chance. The booking of Tom Marquand can’t be ignored, and nor can the gelding’s impressive form, albeit over jumps. The six-year-old has held his own in some solid affairs previously, and he could run into a place at least here.
17.35 – Wolferton Stakes
In another big field, MEYDAAN (18/1) looks one who could outrun his odds. The four-year-old has some solid form in the book from last season and ran very well in defeat behind Liberty Lane last time out at Gowran Park when staying on in the closing stages.
18.10 – Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)
CABALLO DE MAR (6/1) is thriving at the moment, and he could be up to taking this step up in class in his stride. He has won six of his last seven races, with his defeat coming in the Chester Cup behind strong favourite East India Dock. Jockey Callum Shepherd gets on very well with the gelding and they are sure to give their true running in this competitive affair.
