Scotland’s rugged charm extends beyond the roadside beauty spots, with some of its most breathtaking areas hidden far from the beaten path.

For those intrepid adventurers seeking a truly unique experience, Scotland’s most remote pub can only be reached by a seven-mile sea crossing or a long 18-mile walk through the majestic Scottish Highlands. There are no roads.

Nestled in the quaint village of Inverie on Scotland’s west coast, beside a serene sea loch, sits the cherished community-owned Old Forge pub. Regulars describe it as “one of the last wildernesses” a testament to its remarkable inaccessibility, reports the Daily Record.

The imposing mountains of the Knoydart peninsula and the picturesque sea loch of Loch Nevis shape the village’s stunning coastline.

For those willing to embark on the approximately 15-hour trek from Glenfinnan to Inverie, the reward is the welcoming embrace of The Old Forge, a pub that proudly boasts “worth the journey” as its motto.

Dundee locals Ally Turner and Glynis Mattheisen recounted their battle with “atrocious” weather during a three-day walk but found solace in the pub’s hand-cut chips.

“The weather was atrocious but it made it well worth it in the end,” Glynis shared with BBC Radio Scotland. “It’s one of the last wildernesses and it feels very special when you finish that journey.”

The Old Forge, a community-owned Scottish pub, is the perfect pitstop for weary travellers to enjoy some hearty pub fare while supporting local residents. Nestled in Inverie, this village of around 130 people boasts about 70 of them as shareholders actively involved in their beloved local.

The determined community successfully rallied together to crowdfund an impressive £1 million through donations and grants in 2022. The proceeds went into buying and refurbishing their local.

Glynis added: “It’s just a nice story, and it’s a special community.”

One of the primary goals when ownership shifted to the community was to reignite the spark of live music. During the warmer summer months, you can witness incredible sessions of up to 20 musicians gathered around tables, filling the night air with melodies until the early hours.

The pub has a welcoming spirit, after all. As The Old Forge say: “You deserve a great pint after making the journey. Our wee pub strives to offer the best there is, and support local all the way.”
