Les Mis world tour kicks off in UK with Ball and Boe ‘dream team’ | Theatre | Entertainment

Do you hear the (musical theatre) people sing, all over the world? One of the biggest shows of all time just announced a major new global tour. Not in theatres but in huge arenas.

Les Misérables can raise the roof like no other, and Cameron Mackintosh’s lavish new spectacular includes a cast and orchestra of over 65, plus icons who have headlined the show in London’s West End.

Michael Ball, of course, shot to fame as Marius in the original 1985 production. Almost 40 years later, he has swapped roles (and sides) as the vengeful Javert.

He’s joined by his stage and album BFF Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean. The pair caused a sensation in the roles during the 2019 All-Star Staged Concert, in between their own concert tours and recordings. The new tour will expand that production with designs to fill the arena settings.

Cameron Mackintosh said: “The spectacular world arena tour of the Les Misérables concert has been a dream of mine for many years. With Les Mis’ 40th phenomenal year starting this October, there couldn’t be a better time for it to happen.”

The tour starts on September 19 at the SSE Arena, Belfast, before heading to the Ovo Hydro in Glasgow from October 3 and then the Utilita Arena in Sheffield from October 10, and finally the P&J Live in Aberdeen from October 17.

The remaining UK dates come at the end of the world tour dates announced so far at the AO Arena in Manchester from December 26 and the Utilita Arena in Newcastle from January 2.

Eager fans should check the dates carefully because the roles of Valjean and Javert will be shared with two other theatre superstars.

Ball will share the role of Valjean with Les Mis icon Killian Donnelly, who has played the convict-turned-hero in the West End and on tour.

Boe will share the tortured Inspector Javert with Bradley Jaden, who has also played the role in the West End.

The tour will also head to Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Denmark and Norway. Casting has only been announced so far for the UK dates, but surprise guest stars with Les Miserables links are promised for the European dates.

Further shows in Asia, the Middle East and Australia will be announced in course.
