The UK’s prettiest town has been named and with pretty shopfronts, quirky cobbled streets and historic buildings it is easy to see why.

Lewes has been named as the most beautiful town in the UK in a new list by Telegraph travel experts which saw them rate towns across the country, scoring them out of 50.

The East Sussex town scored 46 points as it topped the table with judges praising its medieval history, panoramic views of the South Downs and the beautiful eleventh-century Priory Park.

Queensferry near Edinburgh came in second scoring 45, while St Davids in Pembrokeshire came third despite technically being a city rather than a town.

Experts also ranked the ugliest towns with Slough in Berkshire topping the table for towns which could do with some “aesthetic enhancements”.

Visitors to Lewes will not be short of interesting things to do, with the town playing host to the Anne of Cleaves House Museum, Lewes Castle and the Glyndebourne opera house.

The town also has a seasonal outdoor swimming pool in Petts Pool and Grade I listed ruins in Lewes Priory which Henry III retreated to during the Battle of Lewes in 1264.

Shoppers will be delighted to find the town has a vast array of different independent shops from Cheese Please, which specialises in local produce, to Union Music Store, which offers a wide range of records and CDs.

Those wishing to relax after a hard day of exploring will find a plethora of pubs in the town centre with the Lewes Arms and Pelham Arms just two of its best-rated boozers.

Some of the town’s favourite restaurants include Fork Lewes, which uses local ingredients and Dill, which is in the Michelin Guide.
