Lima: Underrated city totally off the tourist trail home to the world’s best restaurant | World | News

An underrated city in south America is off the tourist trail and home to the world’s best restaurant.

Lima, the capital city of Peru, has a buzzing food scene with lots of award-winning restaurants and is becoming incredibly popular with tourists.

The city’s restaurant Central, has been named the top spot on earth by the World’s 50 Best. It had previously been Geranium in Copenhagen.

Central’s fine dining menu showcases Peru’s biodiversity by taking diners through “15 different Peruvian ecosystems, categorised by altitude – from under the Pacific Ocean to up in the Andes,” according to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

The food takes inspiration from the fusion central to Peru’s cuisine, incorporating Spanish, African, Cantonese and Indigenous flavours.

Other Lima restaurants that made it to the top 50 are Maido (6th), Kjolle (28th) and Mayta (47th), making the city a true foodie capital.

Those that did not make the prestigious list but are still applauded include Astrid y Gaston, La Mar and Rafael.

Things to do in Peri include Meseo Larco and Iglesia de Santa Domingo as well as a number of independent shops selling clothes and crafts.

Outside of the city are the Amazon River, Alpamayo Mountain, Huayne Piccu, Choquequirao and Paracas and Ballestas Islands.

According to online travel sites, the safest areas of Lima are Miraflores, San Isidro and Barranco. The most dangerous are Callao, Chorrillos and Centro Historico.

Street crime, such as mugging and theft, is common in the city. Going out alone at night should be avoided and tourists should not wear expensive jewellery.

There are direct flights from the UK to Lima flying from London. There are indirect flights from Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Leeds.
