Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ‘stopping Kylian Mbappe from signing’ as ex-Red gives verdict | Football | Sport

Ex-Liverpool star Glen Johnson believes that the managerial uncertainty at Anfield will prevent his former side from signing Kylian Mbappe at the end of the season. The forward is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer when his contract expires, with Real Madrid desperate to secure his signature.

Mbappe has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool on numerous occasions over the past few years, with his mum, Fayza Lamari, said to be a big fan of the Reds. However, the finances involved in striking a deal with PSG for the forward has always been regarded as a major stumbling block.

The Ligue 1 outfit have never been keen to entertain offers for Mbappe and consistently demanded a mammoth transfer fee when enquiries have been made, even when he has publicly stated that he intends to run down his contract with the club so that he can leave as a free agent.

Mbappe is now in the final six months of his deal at the Parc des Princes and it is expected that he leaves the French giants in the hope of conquering a new league. Reports have linked the 25-year-old with a move to Liverpool as a result, though Johnson believes that Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave the Merseyside outfit this summer could prevent a deal for Mbappe from being reached.

Asked by Betfred whether Klopp’s decision to leave the Reds has seen Mbappe to Real Madrid rumours accelerate, the former England international replied: “I’m unsure. Real Madrid are always going to be Real Madrid, aren’t they? They’re always going to attract the big names, regardless of who their manager is because they’re one of the most iconic clubs in the world.

“I’m not surprised that he wants to go there. What player wouldn’t? Maybe the uncertainty surrounding who’s going to manage Liverpool next season is the reason why Mbappe wouldn’t be prepared to take the risk of moving to Anfield.

“If he goes to Real Madrid, he will be the best player in La Liga, live in Madrid and will never have to look back. You have that option, or you can go to Liverpool and not know what the next 18 months hold for you. Liverpool are a very difficult club to say no to, but this scenario is a bit different when you take the change of manager into consideration.”

It remains to be seen whether the Reds attempt to intensify their approach of Mbappe over the coming months or whether his negotiations with Real Madrid are already at a point of no return given the levels of speculation.
