Liverpool can sign five players to fix issues and save Arne Slot’s job | Football | Sport
Liverpool failed to arrest their slide on Saturday as they suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest. The Reds have now lost six of their last seven Premier League matches, with head coach Arne Slot coming under increasing pressure.
Slot will be desperate to keep his job throughout the winter and show that his side can be title challengers once again next season. But he could soon be facing a rebuild as the likes of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Alexis Mac Allister and Federico Chiesa aren’t guaranteed to be at the club following the conclusion of the campaign. And Express Sport has taken a look at five players Slot can sign next summer to fix Liverpool’s problems.
Marc Guehi
Liverpool reinforced their attack in the summer with a host of exciting additions. But they neglected their central defence as Jarell Quansah was allowed to leave and wasn’t replaced.
Slot came close to landing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, but the transfer was blocked by the Eagles at the 11th hour.
However, Liverpool are likely to move for Guehi once again next year as his contract is due to expire in the summer.
Alessandro Bastoni
The Merseyside giants are also said to be lining up a mega-money bid for Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.
The Italy international is regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe and has already helped his side keep eight clean sheets in all competitions this season.
With Bastoni, Guehi and Virgil van Dijk at the club, the Reds’ defence would be rock solid once again.
Elliot Anderson
Liverpool could also do with better protection in front of their backline. And Elliot Anderson would fit the bill after illustrating his credentials for Forest at Anfield on Saturday.
Anderson could be a very good fit for the Reds and would offer Slot versatility in a number of midfield roles. And his energy would help reinvigorate Liverpool’s top players.
Kees Smit
Liverpool won’t have unlimited finances to spend next summer, despite the fact that they have brought in a decent amount of cash through player sales in recent years.
Teenage sensation Kees Smit could offer the Reds an affordable solution to bolster their numbers in the centre of the pitch and would arrive at the club with expectations of developing into a Premier League star.
The 19-year-old is currently plying his trade for Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and has excelled in the Eredivisie and the UEFA Conference League.
Antoine Semenyo
Liverpool are said to be in the mix to sign Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, who terrorised the Reds’ defence on the opening night of the season as he bagged two goals at Anfield.
Semenyo’s intensity and work-rate would suit Liverpool’s style and, at the age of 25, his best years could well be ahead of him.
The move would especially make sense if Salah heads through the exit, and the Cherries winger would give Liverpool a new dynamic in the final third of the pitch.
