Liverpool icon has contract ripped up and becomes free agent for January | Football | Sport

Former Liverpool forward Divock Origi is set to become a free agent in January after agreeing to terminate his deal with AC Milan. The news of the Anfield favourite’s availability comes just hours after the Reds received devastating news about striker Alexander Isak’s injury.

Liverpool confirmed on Monday evening that Isak suffered a leg fracture during Saturday’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur, following a challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. The striker has undergone surgery and faces several months out of action, leaving Liverpool short of attacking options. With the January transfer window opening in just nine days, manager Arne Slot may seek to address this issue.

Speaking about Isak’s setback on Tuesday, the Liverpool boss said: “It’s going to be a long injury. A couple of months. That’s a big, big big disappointment for him and also for us.”

According to multiple reports including Sky Sport Italia, Origi has finalised his contract termination with Milan. The 30-year-old will be available at no cost this winter, bringing an end to a difficult chapter in his career.

The Belgian’s switch to the San Siro following his Liverpool departure in 2022 never materialised as hoped, managing just 36 appearances and two goals during his time there.

Since a disappointing loan stint with Nottingham Forest in 2024, he has been sidelined from the squad and a solution has been sought for some time.

However, before his troubles in Italy, Origi had secured his place in Anfield history with several unforgettable goals during Jurgen Klopp’s reign.

His first notable strike was a last-minute winner in the 2018 Merseyside derby. In an unusual sequence of events, Virgil van Dijk’s half-volley hit Everton’s crossbar, bounced twice, and Jordan Pickford failed to clear it, leaving Origi to head home from the goal line.

The forward also played a crucial role in Liverpool’s journey to their sixth Champions League title in 2019. He netted two goals, including the famous “corner taken quickly” goal that completed a 4-3 aggregate comeback against Barcelona at Anfield in the semi-finals, and then scored the decisive goal in the Madrid final against Tottenham.

In light of Isak’s injury setback, it remains uncertain what steps Liverpool will take in the forthcoming transfer window.

When asked about his plans, Slot replied: “My only thoughts are on the upcoming two games. It’s a time for our players and fans to roll their sleeves up to help us in the best possible way.”
