The ex-Roma star remained quiet throughout speculation, and his teammate Robertson has praised the way that the No 11 continued to conduct himself professionally with so many reports circulating about his future.

The left-back said: “During the speculation, I thought he was superb on the pitch and there was a lot of talk outside it. Now that’s all done and dusted, I thought he put in a good second-half performance like we all did, first-half we all were not at it.

“He probably only gets credit when he gets goals which is slightly unfair, but he’s got us two assists today, he’s got us back in the game, created chances and second half he was really good.”
