Liverpool may give Man Utd free run at Antoine Semenyo transfer because of Alexander Isak | Football | Sport
Liverpool may turn their attention away from Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo in January and instead sign a direct replacement for Alexander Isak. The Sweden international was forced off with an injury after finding the back of the net during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday, with Reds chiefs said to be concerned about the extent of the damage.
Liverpool have been pursuing Semenyo, with interested parties able to sign the Ghana international for just under £65million in early January due to a release clause in his contract. But Arne Slot’s priorities have now changed as his side may face an extended period without Isak.
Isak was named on the bench for Liverpool’s trip to north London but was introduced to the action at the halfway stage.
The 26-year-old opened the scoring 11 minutes after the interval as he slotted the ball past Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario. But he suffered an injury while scoring as he was challenged by Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven while striking the ball goalwards.
According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are concerned ahead of the results of Isak’s MRI scan and fear he has suffered a significant injury.
And they could be forced into the transfer market in January in an attempt to navigate the player’s absence should his injury prove serious.
Should the Reds decide to sign an Isak replacement, they would dip into the cash that has been made available to trigger Semenyo’s exit clause.
And Manchester United will be hoping they are given a free run at landing the former Bristol City man if Liverpool pull out of the transfer race.
United are said to be increasingly well-placed to sign Semenyo in January, with Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim aiming to take the player to Old Trafford to strengthen his side’s options at wing-back and in attack.
The former Sporting coach would reportedly utilise Semenyo as a left wing-back or in the No. 10 role in Manchester.
But he would first need to convince the talented star that Old Trafford is the right destination for him, with United experiencing another inconsistent season on the pitch this term.
United could be hampered by Manchester City, however, after it was revealed at the start of the weekend that the Citizens have made contact with Semenyo and his representatives over a move to the Etihad Stadium.
And the 25-year-old wouldn’t let his decision hinge on whether Pep Guardiola remains at the club beyond the end of the campaign, with recent reports suggesting the Spaniard could depart City next summer. So United may need to be quick if they are to snap up the ace.
