Arne Slot’s Liverpool side turned up the heat in the second leg of their last-16 tie against Galatasaray to overturn a first-leg deficit and book a spot in the quarter-finals. The Reds will face a tricky test against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in the last-eight, but it was a night where Liverpool showed plenty of determination and courage.

As is typical of an Anfield night under the lights, Liverpool raced out of the blocks but were unable to find the breakthrough early doors. It eventually arrived via a familiar face, when Dominik Szoboszlai tucked home a cultured finish to continue his rich vein of goalscoring form.

Mohamed Salah missed from the penalty spot to put Liverpool ahead just before the break, but it was after the restart when the floodgates opened. Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch netted twice in quick succession to put the six-time champions ahead, while Salah made up for his missed penalty with a stunning strike on the hour mark.

Would’ve probably got away with bringing a deckchair and putting his feet up. Had basically nothing to do, and any threat the visitors might’ve had disappeared when Viktor Osimhen went off injured.

Spent most of his night playing as a winger, such was his involvement in the Liverpool attack. Was unlucky that a tight offside call denied him an assist for an own-goal during the second-half melee. But it was certainly an improved performance from a player who has struggled at times during his first season.

Would’ve also breathed a sigh of relief when Osimhen went off, given his task became immediately more difficult when Osimhen went off the pitch. Managed to make amends after a horror show in Istanbul last week.

Enjoyed an equally comfortable evening at the back and didn’t look under any threat throughout the contest.

Wanted to see a little more from an offensive point of view, especially given how vulnerable Galatasaray were at the back.

Bossed the midfield and was rewarded for his efforts with a stunning goal, which put the game out of the Turkish side’s reach.

Alexis Mac Allister – 6/10

Certainly more solid in midfield than previous weeks, but still lacked that added edge compared to his team-mates. Will need to up his game if Liverpool have any serious hopes of getting a result vs PSG.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 9/10

Where would they be without their midfield general this season? The Merseysiders have a new talisman and it was a Champions League performance fitting of a midfielder wearing the No.8 shirt. Comfortably the best player on the pitch, and comfortably Liverpool’s player this season.

It wasn’t for a lack of effort, but once again the German’s execution was left wanting. Had a couple of efforts he ought to have done better with, and was sloppy at times with his passing, but his tidy flick created the chance for Salah’s strike in the second half.

On another night, it would’ve been the Frenchman’s exploits that grabbed the headlines. His tenacity at the tip of the attack caused havoc for the Galatasaray defence last week, and he carried that over into Wednesday night’s performance. Easily their signing of the season.

Looked as if it might’ve been a night to forget after the penalty miss, but as all greats of the game do, he dusted himself down and netted a 50th Champions League goal in style. Picking the ball up before cutting inside in characteristic fashion, the ball was destined for one place when it left the Egyptian’s left boot.

Kept things ticking over when he came off the bench and slotted in at right back.

Would’ve wanted to get involved in the goalscoring but didn’t really get a sniff.
