Lloyds Bank confirms 4-month deadline – ‘you won’t be able to do this’ | Personal Finance | Finance

Lloyds Bank has warned customers that one of its in-person services will soon be coming to an end. The bank said in response to a customer question that the ability to cash in cheques at the Post Office will be discontinued this year.

The change came to light after a person contacted Lloyds Bank as their local branch is due to close in October. They wanted to know how they could pay in cheques or cash, change a cash note into coins, and access their statements.

In response, Lloyds explained that they could pay in cash at their local Post Office branch using their debit card, and they could cash in cheques using the mobile app. They provided further tips about using the app to pay in a cheque, which involves taking a photo of the cheque so it can be processed.

Users should ensure both that they have a dark background behind the cheque to contrast the edges of the slip, and that there is sufficient light on the cheque so all its elements can be picked up by your device camera.

Lloyds said customers can pay in coins at the Post Office, though this is limited to £250 for any single deposit of coins. If the coins are for a value of less than a £1, the Post Office can only accept full bags of coins, so it will need to add up to the amount shown on the bag.

If you are handing in £1 and £2 coins, these can be paid in using partly full bags, if the coins are separate. Lloyds Bank went on to explain about the ability to cash in cheques at the Post Office coming to an end.

The group said: “From 31st December, you won’t be able to deposit cheques at the Post Office anymore. You can continue to deposit cheques through the mobile banking app or in a branch.

“If these options don’t work for them, we have a postal cheque service available.”

Lloyds Bank is part of the Lloyds Banking Group and the group’s other two banks, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, are also ending the cheques cash-in service at the Post Office. The group said previously it had decided to cancel the service as very few customers were choosing to deposit cheques at the Post Office.

In other banking news, Nationwide Building Society recently provided an update on a £50 bonus payments scheme which saw millions of members get a payment. All payments have been issued for the Big Nationwide Thank You, which went out as direct payments into accounts or as cheques in the post.

A customer said they couldn’t find the cheques that had been sent out to them in the post for their children and asked if they could get a replacement cheque. A spokesperson for the building society said: “If the customer calls or pops into a branch we will arrange a replacement to be posted within 10-15 days.” Members who received a cheque need to cash it in by January 1, 2026.
