Lonely Planet reveals 11 best places to visit in 2026 – only 3 in Europe | World | News
It’s hardly surprising that, with all this drab, dreary weather, many Brits are itching to book their next holiday and have something to look forward to in 2026. However, with so many incredible countries and destinations to choose from, narrowing down the options can be a daunting task.
Luckily, to assist with this decision, travel guidebook company Lonely Planet has revealed its top spots to visit next year. However, only three of its options are in Europe, and it is quite possible that many tourists may not have even heard of some of these destinations. For those not so keen on exploring the path less travelled, there are also a number of already-popular destinations on the list, including destinations in Europe and South America that will be sure to tick off some must-see sites on your bucket list.
Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
The first on the list is Quetzaltenango, Guatemala’s second-largest city, known locally as Xela (pronounced “she-la”).
Famed for its rich Mayan heritage, colonial architecture, cooler climate due to high altitude, it’s a popular spot for Spanish language learners, hikers, thanks to its nearby volcanoes and hot springs and for those seeking a less touristy, authentic Guatemalan experience with beautiful parks, markets, and neoclassical buildings.

Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City is the capital and largest city of Mexico, as well as the most populous city in North America.
It is known for its rich history, having been built on the ruins of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitla, as well as its vibrant street food, museums and large metropolitan area. As of late 2025, it is home to over 22 million people. Polanco is often dubbed the “Beverly Hills of Mexico” and is where you’ll find high-end luxury shopping and some of the world’s top-rated restaurants.

Tipperary, Ireland
Far closer to home is Lonely Planet’s ninth choice for 2026, Tipperary, a historic town in Munster, Ireland.
It is known for its scenic landscapes like the Glen of Aherlow, historic sites like the Rock of Cashel, traditional pubs and rolling hills that make for the perfect backdrop for hiking, kayaking and cycling, or even just an explore of the nearby charming villages. A visit to historic towns like Thurles and Cashel is a must.

Finland
The first of three European destinations to make the top 11 is the Nordic nation of Finland.
Finland is one of the world’s most northern and geographically remote countries and is the perfect destination for those looking to immerse themself in nature. Its landscape is defined by vast boreal forests, countless blue lakes (earning it the nickname “Land of a Thousand Lakes”) and arctic fells in the north. Its capital, Helsinki, is situated on a peninsula and is home to the 18th-century sea fortress, Suomenlinna.
