A busy stretch of the M61 motorway is currently closed following a serious crash.

The southbound stretch has been closed since midnight between junction eight for Chorley to junction six for Horwich, near Rivington Services.

There are already huge queues while accident investigation work is carried out.

Lancashire Police told MEN that the road will likely remain shut throughout rush hour until mid-morning.

Lancs Police said: “The M61 will remain closed between junctions 6 and 8 on the Southbound carriageway until mid-morning due to a serious collision – please find an alternative route. We will update as soon as we are able to.”
