Magical Christmas market in medieval city is just 3 hours from the UK | Europe | Travel

With Christmas merely weeks away, many are focusing their minds on celebrating the festive period, and there’s no finer way than wandering through a European market while clutching a comforting mug of spiced mulled wine.

One specific Christmas market, positioned against a setting of storybook enchantment and historic architecture, lies just hours from Britain’s shores. The Bruges Christmas market stands as one of the most distinguished in Belgium, arguably across Europe, as the city undergoes a remarkable transformation featuring Christmas trees, vibrant fairy lights, and delightful wooden chalets. The festivities, alternatively referred to as the “Winter Glow”, include a sparkling ice skating rink and a captivating light experience trail winding through the city.

Positioned within the city centre’s core, the Christmas market will extend across two locations, with each zone providing its distinct festive atmosphere, reports the Mirror.

At Grote Markt, visitors will discover traditional wooden chalets decorated with gift ideas, ranging from handmade ornaments to Belgian chocolates, alongside an ice rink for skating amongst the magical surroundings.

A further section of the Christmas market, though somewhat more compact, occupies Simon Stevinplein, emphasising “short-chain and craft products”.

Close by, cobbled streets feature welcoming cafés, where visitors can savour the aroma of local chocolatiers whilst absorbing the Gothic architecture of this remarkably preserved city.

The Christmas market is a foodie’s paradise, offering Belgian delights such as fresh waffles and cheeses, along with spiced mulled wine or traditional beer at the “IJsgloed” Winter Bar that overlooks the ice rink.

The bar is festooned with lights and decorations, complete with wooden barstools and barrels, providing a cosy retreat to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

During your visit, you can also take a stroll along the 3.5km light trail through the historic city, admiring 10 captivating light installations set within unexpected venues.

Despite its small size, Bruges’ intimate ambience and the enchanting “Winter Glow” that engulfs the city from November 21 to January 4 make it one of Europe’s most charming destinations.

Additionally, you can ascend the 366 steps of the iconic 83-metre-high Belfry of Bruges (Belfort van Brugge) for panoramic views of the city.

You can also enjoy a brisk walk along its meandering canals, often referred to as the “Venice of the North”, or wander through Minnewaterpark with its peaceful lake and serene surroundings.

Moreover, you can hop on the Eurostar from London St Pancras International to Brussels Midi/Zuid in less than two hours, followed by a quick hour train to Bruges, making it incredibly convenient for a winter escape.

Or why not extend your stay and experience both Belgian cities for a festive trip like no other?
