Tucked away within the rolling hills of Derbyshire lies a charming village that embodies the appeal of a perfect seaside resort – without the coast.
This bustling little town set in the Peak District has become a popular day trip location for families across the Midlands, offering a coastal-style adventure.
Matlock Bath has drawn visitors since the 17th century and was even described as ‘little Switzerland’ by Lord Byron due to its steep hillsides and stunning views.
Today, it creates the sensation of being by the sea, with an abundance of fish and chip shops, confectionery stores, ice cream vendors and, naturally, arcade attractions.
It provides all the features of a seaside resort, minus the breeze and sandy children, replaced instead with lush scenery, the winding River Derwent and numerous walking trails.

For family outings, the spot boasts both educational attractions and those purely designed for amusement.
The Matlock Bath Aquarium and the Peak District Mining Museum are both easily accessible for those seeking a respite from the delightful sweet treats the village offers.
For a tranquil element to your day trip, the renowned Lovers Walk is a must.
This scenic riverside stroll delivers stunning views of cliff-side buildings, vibrant floral displays and a park for a restful pause. When circumstances permit, visitors can hire a rowing boat and admire Matlock Bath from the water.
What sets this village apart is its culinary delights – particularly its impressive array of fish and chip shops, all located along a single street.

With as many as 10 outlets serving Britain’s favourite dish, diners are spoilt for choice. However, one seems to be a cut above the rest among tourists.
According to TripAdvisor rankings, Tucker Fish and Chips takes the title as Matlock Bath’s top-rated chippy, boasting an exceptional overall review score of 4.5.
One glowing review states: “We go to Whitby every year, and as anyone will tell you, it can’t be beaten for fish and chips. Well, hold up.
“Because this little place is on par with the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Staff are amazing, the food is absolutely fantastic with melt-in-your-mouth batter, and the curry sauce is top-notch. If you’re in Matlock, make sure this is your first choice for fish and chips because you won’t be disappointed.”
Other chippies along the strip include Matlock mainstays such as Kostas Fish Bar, Route 66 Promenade Fish Bar and Taste of The Waves.
But they’re not the only attractions; nestled amongst these are numerous sweet shops offering traditional British sweets, ice creams and other scrumptious treats.
Positioned along the promenade stands Derwent Amusement Centre, containing the village’s complete array of arcade attractions, from classic two-penny machines to air hockey, claw games and even a gaming section limited to adults.
Children could whilst away endless hours here, irrespective of the weather, after sampling the village’s enticing sweet shop selections.
Located merely one and a half miles south of the bigger town of Matlock, Matlock Bath offers an attractive escape whilst staying within easy reach of the drinking establishments and high-street shops its adjacent town boasts.
Many guests choose to embark on a pub crawl from Matlock down to Matlock Bath, taking the train between these two scenic locations.
