Man Utd ‘close to Kobbie Mainoo agreement’ as Harry Maguire contract decision made | Football | Sport
Manchester United are close to agreeing new contracts for Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, according to reports. Mainoo has emerged as a crucial cog in United’s midfield machine under Michael Carrick, having been frozen out of the squad under Ruben Amorim. He failed to make a single Premier League start in 2025/26 until the Portuguese manager was sacked in January.
Mainoo has since been ever-present under Carrick and is currently tied down until the summer of 2027, with a club-held option to extend by a further year. However, it seems the 20-year-old will be rewarded for his impressive form with an entirely new deal. United are edging closer to finalising a fresh contract that would take him through until 2031, according to The Athletic.
The report claims that Mainoo has been offered a ‘significantly improved salary’ as part of those terms. There is still work to be done, but talks are now believed to be advancing with a view to wrapping things up in the near future.
It comes just months after the midfielder was pushing to leave United after falling out of favour during Amorim’s spell as head coach.
His return to prominence under Carrick has led to an England recall, with Thomas Tuchel naming him in the squad to face Uruguay and Japan during the upcoming international break.
Mainoo will now be hoping to kick on and earn a spot on the plane for this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Maguire, meanwhile, is only tied down until the end of this season but is also expected to be handed a new deal at Old Trafford.
It’s claimed that a fresh one-year contract with an option to extend by a further 12 months is ‘in the process of being finalised’.
Both players have started all nine of United’s games since Carrick was appointed on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.
Their performances have helped the Red Devils to secure seven victories and one draw, leaving them with a great chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
They currently sit third in the Premier League table and could move within four points of second-placed Manchester City if they beat Bournemouth on Friday night.
