Benjamin Sesko’s impressive goalscoring form for Manchester United has left a Sky Sports pundit looking very silly indeed. The former RB Leipzig man is the Premier League’s most in-form striker, having bagged seven goals in his last eight appearances. That is despite him being regularly overlooked for a starting spot, with many of his goals coming from the substitutes’ bench.

Sesko made his latest contribution against Crystal Palace, helping United to come from behind and maintain their unbeaten run under Michael Carrick. He scored the winner in the 65th minute, shortly after Bruno Fernandes had cancelled out Maxence Lacroix’s opener from the penalty spot. It took a while for Sesko to get going at Old Trafford, but he is now proving his worth as a clinical operator in the final third.

His incredible form comes just weeks after Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood suggested that Sesko should never play for the Red Devils again.

After watching the 22-year-old score a brace in the draw against Burnley back in January, Sherwood said: “I think the positive is Sesko scoring two goals. Hopefully he gets some confidence going.

“It’s took him six months to turn up at Man United and I’m pleased for the lad. He’s had a tough run of it. I had him off the pitch at half-time, never to wear a Man United shirt again.”

Offered the chance to praise the forward, Sherwood declined, adding: “I stand by what I said. He’s not good enough to play for Man United. He’s turned up for one game against Burnley who are going to get relegated.”

Since then, Sesko has been scoring at a rate of one goal every 43 minutes, leaving Sherwood red-faced with his comments falling wide of the mark.

Sesko was finally picked to start up front against Palace and justified that decision with his match-winning contribution. Carrick later said that he had no qualms about trusting the Slovenia international to deliver the goods.

“It’s not a gamble,” he said. “It wasn’t that big of a decision. Benjamin is in a good place and he has had a major impact in recent weeks.

“He’s learning what it feels like to play here and to score the winner today is fantastic. We are here to help and I’m sure that will continue. He is willing to do whatever that is.”

Gary Neville, meanwhile, said on Sky Sports: “I have to say the goal from Benjamin Sesko is an absolute beauty. It’s a brilliant header, a proper header.

“He’s got confidence now and he got a start today which had to happen after his recent form. The confidence, the goals, the finishes… they’re some brilliant goals he’s scoring by the way.

“He’s definitely improved enormously. Michael Carrick never picked him in the team, he didn’t pick him in the team until today so he’s obviously had doubts about him in terms of not being right or not being quite there.

“The goal today is really good. I think he’s working Sesko into form and that’s a game-changer for Man United because they cannot have another centre-forward come to the club and fail. They just can’t.”
