Marc Guehi denied Man City Carabao Cup medal after being banned for Arsenal win | Football | Sport
Manchester City have claimed the Carabao Cup following a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the final. A second-half double from Nico O’Reilly secured the silverware, with the academy graduate among numerous players who collected medals beneath the iconic Wembley arch. But January signing Marc Guehi was not one of them after being banned from playing in the final.
James Trafford, Matheus Nunes, Nathan Ake, Abdukodir Khusanov, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland, as the 10 other starting players with O’Reilly, all received medals. The eight substitutes, which included Gianluigi Donnarumma, Phil Foden, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez, Omar Marmoush, Savinho and Tijjani Reijnders, also collected medals on the day.
There are a further 10 available to the club which they can distribute at their own discretion, and should they wish to present more beyond that figure, that is permitted but with an additional charge.
The EFL rule 20.2 on the awarding of medals states: “In addition to the Cup, the Management Committee shall present thirty souvenirs to the winning Club in the Final Tie; and thirty souvenirs to the losing Club in the Final Tie. Additional souvenirs may be presented with the consent of the Management Committee but shall be at the cost of the requesting Club.” Despite this, Marc Guehi will not be eligible for a medal due to a rule change introduced this season. The rule stipulates that players can now represent two clubs in the competition, but only if the transfer is completed before the semi-final first leg.
City triumphed over Newcastle United in the first leg of their semi-final six days before Guehi’s arrival at the Etihad, which means he cannot officially receive one. He was seen on the pitch post-match without a medal around his neck.
It came after the former Crystal Palace captain was ineligible to play against Arsenal. Under new EFL rules brought in for the 2025-26 season, players were required to be registered with a team before the semis to be able to play in either leg or in the final.
Injured defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias are both eligible for medals, even though the latter hasn’t played a single minute in the competition.
Max Alleyne participated in three Carabao Cup matches this season, with one on loan at Watford and two for City following his recall in January.
That decision was made a week before the journey to Newcastle, making him eligible for a medal. Jaden Heskey and Reigan Heskey were other young talents who featured for City, with the pair gaining minutes in their third round victory over Huddersfield.
Kaden Brathwaite and Stephen Mfuni were unused substitutes for that match but will also be eligible. Rico Lewis, Kalvin Phillips and Divine Mukasa have also been selected in this competition by Guardiola.
Oscar Bobb and Charlie Gray were others involved as they both played in the quarter-final victory over Brentford – though the latter is unlikely to receive one given his January move to Fulham. For the players involved, City are likely to be just under the amount of medals made, but they can request more, as per EFL rules.
