Martin Brundle admits he has secret information on Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari transfer | F1 | Sport

Martin Brundle has revealed he has secret information on Lewis Hamilton’s possible Ferrari move. The Sky Sports F1 host admitted he knew where rumours of Ferrari’s readiness to offer Hamilton a deal came from.

Earlier this week, The Mail reported that the Scuderia were preparing a £40million bid to secure Hamilton’s services. It claimed the team’s preference was for Hamilton to partner Charles Leclerc for 2024 but did not rule out swapping the Monegasque to get a deal over the line.

Ahead of Friday practice, Brundle stressed he was aware of the source but refused to share more information. He said: “I even know where the rumour came from. It’s all been a bit mischievous. I can’t tell you that.”

On Thursday, Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur denied the team had approached Hamilton. The Briton also highlighted that he had not received an offer from Ferrari and suggested he had no intention of leaving the Silver Arrows.

Brundle has also questioned the finances involved in any possible deal as he backed Hamilton to remain at Mercedes. The German marque are working flat-out to reduce the deficit to Red Bull after a difficult start to 2023.

The squad will introduce a range of upgrades for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix with aerodynamic tweaks, floor changes and a new suspension. He explained: “It makes no sense for him to step away from Mercedes-Benz at this time.

“What I do know is I’ve negotiated quite a lot of Formula One contracts for myself and for other drivers and I’ve never seen an accurate figure in the media yet by some margin. These numbers get bandied about.”

Meanwhile, the seven-time champion feels the news had only emerged as people were “bored”. Speaking in the press conference, Hamilton added: “I think naturally, when you’re in contract negotiations, there’s always going to be speculation.

“I think, ultimately, unless you hear from me, then that’s all it is.” The 38-year-old cooled the rumours after revealing that a new deal with Mercedes was close to being finalised.

But Leclerc made it clear he would be happy to work with Hamilton if a deal was agreed. He remarked: “Lewis is such an incredible driver, has achieved so much in the sport. So, I think anybody on the grid will love to have Lewis as a team-mate, as everybody will learn a lot from him.”
