‘Masterpiece’ action thriller better than John Wick | Films | Entertainment

A ‘ferocious’ action thriller that ‘obliterates expectations’ is now available for streaming on Prime Video.

Expectations were sky-high for Ballerina when it first graced the big screen last year, largely due to its status as the inaugural blockbuster spin-off from the critically acclaimed and commercially triumphant John Wick franchise.

After four chapters of the Keanu Reeves-led saga, the production house decided to broaden the universe, initially with the 2023 TV series The Continental, followed by Ballerina.

Ana de Armas, who previously demonstrated her acting prowess and action capabilities in Knives Out and the James Bond film No Time To Die, assumes the lead role.

She portrays Eve Macarro, a character steeped in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma. She confronts an army of killers in her quest for vengeance against those responsible for her father’s death.

The narrative unfolds between the third and fourth John Wick instalments, reports the Mirror.

Ballerina was directed by Len Wiseman, known for his work on two of the Underworld films, Die Hard 4, and the Total Recall remake featuring Colin Farrell. The screenplay was crafted by Shay Hatten, who contributed to John Wick Chapter 3 and 4 and penned Army of the Dead, directed by Zack Snyder.

Whilst Ballerina didn’t quite capture the critics’ hearts in the same way as the John Wick films, it has certainly won over audiences. The film boasts an impressive 92% popcorn meter rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many viewers considering it on par with its predecessor John Wick.

One enthusiast sharing their views online proclaimed: “A new masterpiece joins the John Wick universe, one of the most powerful action film series. Fans of John Wick will enjoy this film greatly.”

Another commented: “Ballerina is an absolute knockout. A ferocious blend of grace and brutality that delivers some of the most unique action scenes I’ve seen in years.

“Ana de Armas completely obliterates expectations here. Her performance is so intense, precise, and downright savage that, at some point, I was just watching a pure force of vengeance tear through everything in her path.”

Meanwhile, a third viewer went as far as to declare: “Brilliant, masterpiece. A juicy ripe cherry on top of the Wickverse. Ana De Armas shines in character, convincingly. Whole stellar cast excels. Amazing cinematography and visually stunning. Very well written and brought to screen by Len Wiseman. Incredible musical score.”

They added: “Filled to the rim with usual frantic action, rapid story pace, adrenaline, conviction, drama, intrigue, mystery, emotion and savageries typical of Wick. Perfect movie, very entertaining.”

Another viewer exclaimed: “So much fun to watch. I never re-watch movies, I’ve seen it three times! Love the elaborate fight scenes, and choreography. Highly recommend if you like John Wick movies. When I saw the pilot light in that dark alley – I yelled out loud! ! Oh no! ! !” Meanwhile, another fan noted: “The fight scenes were some of the best fight scenes I’ve seen, definitely the best fight scene in John Wick.”
