Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed war ‘masterpiece’, which bagged seven Oscars, is now available for free streaming just as it’s set to depart from Netflix’s catalogue.

The epic period drama Oppenheimer was introduced to the streaming behemoth earlier this year, but subscribers are running out of time to catch it before it exits the platform.

Having made its cinematic debut in 2023, the title card on Netflix indicates that it will be removed after January 11. However, viewers can breathe a sigh of relief as it has just been added to BBC iPlayer, allowing them to watch it at no additional cost.

The duration of its availability on the broadcaster’s platform remains unknown at present.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, the film recounts historical events when Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. assigns physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to the highly classified Manhattan Project, reports the Mirror.

Oppenheimer and his team of scientists dedicate years to the development and design of the atomic bomb.

Their groundbreaking work culminates on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, irrevocably altering the course of history. The film delves into Oppenheimer’s relentless scientific ambition, ethical quandaries, and the geopolitical repercussions, ultimately spotlighting his intricate legacy, the moral weight of crafting a world-changing weapon, and the ensuing political scrutiny he endured.

The stellar ensemble features Peaky Blinders’ Cillian Murphy in the lead role, with Emily Blunt portraying his spouse Kitty Oppenheimer. They’re joined by Florence Pugh as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock and Matt Damon as General Groves Jr.

The supporting cast boasts Robert Downey Jr. , Rami Malek, Casey Affleck, Jason Clarke, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh amongst others.

Writer-director Nolan adapted the screenplay from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus.

The film proved both a critical darling and box office phenomenon, raking in approximately $975 million worldwide against a $100 million production budget. It also garnered a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and swept the 2024 Oscars, claiming seven awards.

These accolades included Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Film Editing and Score.
