‘Masterpiece’ starring Hollywood icon is ‘one of the best gangster films ever’ | Films | Entertainment

A lesser-known gangster film starring a Hollywood legend is hailed by fans as “one of the very best of the genre”.The King of New York (1990) focuses on Frank White (played by Christopher Walken) a fictional crime boss who is released from prison after a lengthy sentence. White is on a mission to take total control of the city’s criminal underworld and use the wealth to provide for the poor.

The crime drama was directed by Abel Ferrara and follows White and his criminal associates as they go after their competition while law enforcement seeks to bring them down. The film features a star-studded cast including Wesley Snipes, Steve Buscemi, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, and CSI Miami star David Caruso.

It also features other major stars, including David Caruso, best known for his leading role in CSI: Miami, future Matrix star Laurence Fishburne, and 90s action icon Wesley Snipes. also have supporting roles in a star-studded cast.

The film has a relatively modest 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter (which is the percentage of users who rated the film 3.5 stars or higher), and has its detractors, with some viewers calling it dated and criticising its plot.

But many hold it up amongst the classics of the genre, with one person taking to the website to write: “Hang up your jacket, order some food, dim the lights, and enjoy this amazing and underrated gangster epic, you’re less than likely to regret it.”

Another called it “one of the best gangster movies” adding that Walken is “fantastic”.

A third added:” The highs and lows of every scene are constructed masterfully. Frank White is a walking poem.”

A fourth said: “There aren’t a lot of original gangster movie plots anymore. Movies like this one set a high, high bar for any that follow.

“Casting was fantastic. Believable acting to go along with distinct characters. Great directing.”

A fifth called it a “true masterpiece”.

The film has 18 certificate and contains strong bloody violence and hard drug use, so may not be for everyone.
