Enthusiasts of Scottish history and Scotland-based dramas have reason to celebrate, as a film praised as both a critical and box office triumph is now available for streaming.

The sweeping war drama, helmed and produced by Mel Gibson, portrays events from the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England.

The film, which also stars Gibson as Scottish warrior Sir William Wallace, also features some prominent Scottish names like Angus Macfadyen and David O’Hara.

Braveheart, the film in question, was inspired by Blind Harry’s 15th-century epic poem, The Actes and Deidis of the Illustre and Vallyeant Campioun Schir William Wallace.

Garnering considerable acclaim for its battle sequences and acting, the film can now be watched on Disney+.

Following the deaths of William Wallace’s father and brother in combat against the English, Wallace is sent to continental Europe for his schooling.

He returns to Scotland as an adult (played by Gibson) and weds his childhood sweetheart, Murron (Catherine McCormack).

When his wife is later executed, Wallace leads his clan in slaughtering the English garrison and continues to fight to expel the English from Scotland.

Production was originally planned to occur in the UK, but the majority was filmed in Ireland after 1,600 members of the Irish Army Reserve were recruited as extras.

Whilst he garnered substantial acclaim for his performance, Gibson was originally only keen on directing and had contemplated Brad Pitt for the part of Sir William Wallace, but he subsequently reluctantly consented to portray the principal character as well.

The film’s debut triggered a massive surge in tourism to Scotland, with one account suggesting the “Braveheart effect” produced £7 million to £15 million in visitor revenue.

Taking to IMDb reviews to express their views, fan heisenberg12 said: “It’s a masterpiece, best movie of all time.”

They added: “Braveheart is the best movie ever made in history, an absolute sculpted work of art that depicts every emotion of human existence, from suffering, to courage, to love, in front of the background of political astuteness and socio-hierarchical analysis.”

One enthusiast praised it “bucket list quality”, explaining: “Braveheart is a classic film that should be on everyone’s Must Watch Before I Die list.”

Another labelled it “the best movie ever created”, adding, “This movie is definitely on every movie lover’s top five list. The movie captures the viewers with many epic battle scenes yet still worms your heart with romance and then turns you around with mystery.

“The drama in this movie never stops and will have you clinging to the edge of your seat until the very end.”
