Michael Carrick fumes at ‘crazy’ decision as Man Utd controversially denied by VAR | Football | Sport

Michael Carrick was left incensed that Manchester United weren’t given a second penalty moments before Bournemouth scored their first goal on Friday night. The two teams played out a 2-2 draw in a frenetic encounter at the Vitality Stadium that provided no shortage of controversy. United took the lead from the spot, with Bruno Fernandes rolling his effort into the bottom corner after Matheus Cunha was brought down inside the area.

The visitors were unfortunate to be denied another penalty when Amad was pushed to the ground shortly afterwards, with their protests being waved away. Bournemouth went straight up the other end and found a leveller, with Ryan Christie firing home from the edge of the box. VAR examined the decision not to award United a second penalty, but it was decided there was insufficient contact.

Carrick was asked for his thoughts after the final whistle and made no attempt to hide his true feelings, with his frustration clear for all to see.

“A lot happened in the end,” he told Sky Sports. “I thought we had good chances, good opportunities. We had enough to be ahead. Little bit more comfortable in the game.

“Found the goal and should have had another penalty. If you get one, you should have got the other. Either way he [referee Stuart Attwell] has got one wrong.

“It’s pretty much identical for me, two-hand grab. Either way, he’s got one wrong, but to give one and not give the other, I can’t get my head around it, I think it’s crazy. It’s a bit baffling, really.

“Because of that, they score and then it’s chaos after that, really. We should have had another penalty and the game would have been totally different.”

United eventually restored their lead thanks to an own goal from James Hill before they were gut-punched by the final and most important twist to the tale.

Harry Maguire was shown a straight red card for hauling Evanilson to the ground in the area. Eli Junior Kroupi made no mistake from 12 yards to snatch a point for Bournemouth, ensuring the spoils were shared at the final whistle.

Although it was a disappointing result for United, Carrick was quick to offer some perspective, adding: “We’re in a good place. We’ve put ourselves in this position through some good work, good results and good performances.

“We could have had more tonight but it’s not the end of the world. I think we’ve made some improvements. There are things we can improve on and we can get a lot better.”

The result saw United miss the opportunity to move within four points of second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League table. They remain third, though, and still have a great chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
