More than150 people struck by ‘vomiting’ bug on Celebrity cruise line ship | Cruise | Travel

More than 150 passengers onboard the Celebrity Summit cruise ship fell sick in an outbreak of norovirus at the end of May.

According to the official report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 152 of the 2,144 people onboard fell sick.

Around two percent of crew also reported feeling ill with 25 of the 963 crew members onboard feeling sick.

The symptoms of norovirus include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and headaches.

The CDC reported that the ship’s crew took several actions to stem the impact of the outbreak.

Crew increased “cleaning and disinfection procedures”, notified guests of the outbreak and collected and sent stool samples to the CDC for analysis.

They also notified embarking guests of the outbreak and encouraged passengers to report any symptoms.

The cruise took place during May and was travelling to Bermuda and South Carolina in the USA when the outbreak occurred.

It can be easy for viruses to spread on cruise ships as there are so many passengers within a small space.

According to the CDC, there have been 10 outbreaks of norovirus on cruise ships this year alone.

In 2022, there were just two reported outbreaks on cruise ships although there were eight in 2019 before the pandemic.
