My favourite period drama is ‘greatest of all time’ and now on Netflix | Films | Entertainment

My favourite period drama has been hailed as one of the “greatest of all time”, and it’s available on Netflix right now. Bridgerton is a regency romance television series created by Chris Van Dusen for Netflix. It is based on the book series of the same name by Julia Quinn, and it is also Shondaland’s first scripted show for Netflix.

Three series have been released so far, each of which follows one of the close-knit siblings of the noble and influential Bridgerton family as they navigate the highly competitive social season, during which young marriageable nobility and gentry are introduced to society and are looking for a partner. The series is set during the early 19th century in an alternative Regency-era London Regency era. There has also been a spin-off series called Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The fourth season is expected to air in 2026.

The first series synopsis reads: “Bridgerton follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market. Hoping to follow in her parents’ footsteps and find a match sparked by true love, Daphne’s prospects initially seem to be unrivalled.

“But as her older brother begins to rule out her potential suitors, the high society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown casts aspersions on Daphne. Enter the highly desirable and rebellious Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), committed bachelor and the catch of the season for the debutantes’ mamas.

“Despite proclaiming that they want nothing the other has to offer, their attraction is undeniable and sparks fly as they find themselves engaged in an increasing battle of wits while navigating society’s expectations for their future.”

I absolutely adore this series; it has served as the gateway into my love of period dramas. Period dramas can have a bad rep for being boring at times; however, Bridgerton is a modern take on a classic period drama and its gripping storylines have me hooked.

Brigerton has been listed in Bazaar’s top 20 best period dramas. Alongside this, it has been hailed by fans and critics alike. The critics of Rotten Tomatoes said: “Sumptuous design, soapy drama, and a sterling cast make Bridgerton a delightful treat.”

An “absolute masterpiece” is how one fan described the series, with another labelling it the “greatest period drama of all time”.

If you haven’t already watched it, Bridgerton is available to watch on Netflix now.
