Netflix fans miss Wake Up Dead Man cameo | Films | Entertainment
The creator of one of Netflix’s current chart-toppers has revealed a significant cameo that most viewers have overlooked.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery has quickly ascended to the top of Netflix’s rankings, mere days after its debut.
The film was added to the streaming giant’s roster on Friday, following a brief stint in cinemas.
This is the third entry in the Knives Out series, all starring the character Detective Benoit Blanc.
Daniel Craig, best known for his tenure as James Bond, reprises his role as Blanc, tackling what the synopsis describes as his most challenging and perilous case yet.
After the original film’s resounding success in 2019, Netflix struck a deal with its writer and director, Rian Johnson, for future sequels. Johnson’s portfolio includes the sci-fi blockbuster Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and one of the most acclaimed episodes of Breaking Bad.
The first sequel to Knives Out, Glass Onion, premiered on Netflix in 2022, paving the way for the third instalment, Wake Up Dead Man. The plot revolves around young priest Jud Duplenticy, who is dispatched to aid the charismatic Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, reports the Mirror.
However, it’s evident that all is not as it seems among the congregation. Wicks’s small yet dedicated following comprises a diverse mix of lawyers, doctors and authors.
When an unexpected and seemingly inexplicable murder sends shockwaves through the town, the absence of a clear culprit leads local police chief Geraldine Scott to team up with esteemed detective Benoit Blanc to untangle a mystery that defies reason.
Since its release, fans have been eagerly dissecting the film, attempting to crack the enigma themselves. Now, the director has unveiled a hidden gem – a special cameo that continues a tradition.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, known for his early career in sitcom Third Rock from the Sun and later roles in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception, has a long-standing collaborative relationship with Rian Johnson. He made his first appearance in Johnson’s directorial debut, Brick, in 2005 and has since featured in every subsequent film by the director in some form.
In The Brothers Bloom, Gordon-Levitt can be spotted in the background of a bar scene, sipping beer while Mark Ruffalo performs a magic trick.
While he took on a leading role once again in Looper for Johnson, his voice features in later films. He lends his voice to an alien named Slowen Lo, who informs Finn that he can’t park his shuttle on the beach in The Last Jedi.
In the first Knives Out film, Gordon-Levitt provided the voice for Detective Hardrock, featured in the crime programme that Marta’s sister watches on her laptop whilst in the kitchen. For Glass Onion, Gordon-Levitt returned once more to voice the hourly chime heard echoing throughout the picture.
Wake Up Dead Man continues this tradition, with Johnson confirming Gordon-Levitt’s latest cameo appearance. During a recent interview, when one journalist appeared to have overlooked the moment, telling Johnson: “I missed JGL (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) in it (the film).”
Johnson clarified: “He’s in it. He’s – listen – he’s the baseball announcer on the TV. And you can hear him in one scene in particular, you really hear him talk. And I got to write baseball commentary for him to say. So, got him in.”
Wake Up Dead Man A knives Out Mystery is streaming on Netflix.
