New Orleans: 10 confirmed dead on Bourbon Street as vehicle rams crowd – suspect at large | World | News
Multiple people have been killed after a vehicle ploughed through a crowd of revellers on New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street in the US, officials have confirmed.
Emergency officials confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in the incident, while at least another 30 were injured.
Police said the strike appeared to be intentional and added that the driver had not been taken into custody, ABC7 reported.
Witnesses claimed that a vehicle crashed into a crowd at high speed, and then the driver got out and started firing a weapon, with police returning fire.
New Orleans government agency NOLA Ready said in a post on social media that there had been “a mass casualty incident on Canal and Bourbon Street”, warning people nearby to “get yourself away from the area.”
The incident occurred around 3.15am local time at the intersection of Bourbon Street and Iberville, in the Louisiana city’s French Quarter.
Emergency services, including ambulances and vehicles from the coroner’s office, were reportedly at the scene. Bourbon Street appeared to be shut down with a heavy police presence.
In a post on X, a journalist at local news outlet WGNO-TV wrote: “NOPD source states that as many as 10 fatalities after driver in pickup truck plowed into crowd on Bourbon Street.
“Multiple more injuries. Mayor and police chief on scene,” he added, though this has not yet been confirmed.
WGNO reports the Bourbon Street has been cleared and closed as emergency services attend its intersection with Iberville.
Police are expected to address the incident in a press conference shortly.
