Two weeks ago, Sony dropped a massive update for the PlayStation 5 Pro that makes it capable of running games in a much higher quality than before without sacrificing performance.
The technology is the second generation of the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), an upscaling algorithm that takes a low resolution image and fills in the details with an AI-driven software solution. PSSR was already available on the PS5 Pro, but the newer version of the system has resulted in select games looking far better than they did before, especially at higher resolutions.
Although PSSR 2 is only available on the PS5 Pro right now, it’s causing a ruckus among some gamers who primarily play on PC. Although players are spoilt for choice when it comes to upscaling solutions on PC with Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR and Intel’s XESS, there are some gamers that think PSSR 2 is so good that it’s worth switching to console completely.

‘PSSR 2 might honestly make me quit PC gaming’, reads one Reddit post. They explain that they’ve been playing Spider-Man Remastered on the PlayStation 5 Pro, and that running PSSR 2 in the Performance Pro mode can give the best of both worlds, delivering smooth gameplay without compromising on resolution.
“After the latest PSSR 2 update and changing my settings to allow it, the performance pro mode looks better than fidelity and obviously runs significantly smoother up to 90fps at times,” the user writes.
“I compared it to my PC where I also have the game, and even though my PC could run it at a higher frame rate, it felt just as smooth on the PS5 Pro and looked just as good. I’m amazed by this update!”

Other Reddit users are also concurring that with the ongoing RAM crisis causing PC components to rise astronomically in price, console gaming is where it’s currently at.
“I can’t quit PC gaming but until hardware prices come down I’m gonna be console gaming a bit. Loving my Pro,” reads one comment.
Another adds: “Honestly when I game, I don’t want to use time optimizing settings (although it can be fun) or waste time with windows. PS5 Pro looks amazing.”
As someone who plays a lot of PC games myself, I can certainly relate to the point that sitting at the same desk for both work and play can get tiresome – especially when working from home. “I’ve been on PC for ten years, and I also work at a desk all day, so I just hate gaming at a desk anymore. I want to be on a couch with a controller staring at a huge tv,” one comment reads.
PSSR 2 currently only works in select games with a dedicated patch, but the list of supported games is growing each week. Currently, these are all the games that support PSSR 2 on the PS5 Pro:
- Alan Wake 2
- Control
- Crimson Desert
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard
- Dragon’s Dogma 2
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Monster Hunter Wilds
- Nioh 3
- Rise of the Ronin
- Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
- Silent Hill 2
- Silent Hill f
- Spider-Man Remastered
- Spider-Man 2
Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 are expected to receive PSSR 2 updates in the near future.
If you’re looking to pick up a PS5 Pro to take advantage of PSSR 2, you might want to grab one quickly. Sony is increasing the price of the console April 2 with it jumping from £699.99 to £789.99.
