Novak Djokovic fires back at tennis chief over statement on future plans | Tennis | Sport
Ahead of the season-ending tournament, Italian tennis federation president Angelo Binaghi said: “We have confirmation that Djokovic will play.”
The 38-year-old skipped the season-ending tournament last year and has been selective with his schedule again in 2025, with injuries and niggles also taking a toll.
Djokovic recently retired in the middle of his third-place playoff match at the Six Kings Slam exhibition, explaining that he had some physical problems to address, and then skipped the Paris Masters.
The world No. 5 returned to competition in Athens this week, beating Alejandro Tabilo in his opening match, and then shut down Binaghi’s claims about his ATP Finals plans.
“I don’t know where (Binaghi) got this information, certainly not from me or my team,” Djokovic told SDNA after reaching the Athens quarter-final. “I will decide at the end of this tournament.”
Djokovic is still alive in at the Hellenic Championship, where he next faces Nuno Borges. The draw for the ATP Finals will take place at 12pm local time (11am UK) on Thursday, and Djokovic will be included if he has not yet made a decision on withdrawing.
The eighth and final place in the field has also yet to be determined. Auger-Aliassime currently sits at eighth in the race, but Musetti can overtake him and qualify for the season-ending event if he lifts the Hellenic Championship title.
Should Djokovic pull out of the ATP Finals, both Auger-Aliassime and Musetti would get a place in the tournament regardless of Musetti’s results in Athens.
For now, the 24-time Major champion is fully focused on his Hellenic Championship campaign. Djokovic got revenge over Tabilo in his opening match, winning 7-6(3) 6-1. Tabilo had beaten him in their last two matches.
Afterwards, he said: “Now the tournament has started, so let’s take it slowly, one match at a time. I’m very happy that I won tonight and against a player that I had not beaten before, we had played twice and he had won both.
“That’s why I was quite nervous before the match, maybe more than usual. I got a lot of energy from the people for that and I want to thank you.”
