Officer killed Bondi attacker with ‘once in a lifetime’ shot | World | News

A chilling video from the devastating mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, which tragically claimed 15 lives, has captured the moment a courageous officer made a ‘once in a lifetime’ shot to neutralise the attackers.

The horrifying event unfolded when father and son, Sajid and Naveed Akram, allegedly opened fire on the Jewish community gathered for a Hanukkah event at Australia’s renowned Bondi Beach in Sydney around 6.50pm on Sunday, December 14, resulting in 15 fatalities and numerous injuries.

The video circulating on social media shows the police officer stealthily approaching the gunmen from behind, taking cover behind a tree before firing at the footbridge where the pair began their attack. Separate footage reveals the elder alleged attacker, Sajid, falling before Naveed retaliates.

The younger assailant was shot shortly afterwards and is currently in critical condition.

New South Wales (NSW) Police have yet to disclose the identity of the officer who took down Sajid. However, according to the Daily Telegraph, the police praised the hit as a “once in a lifetime shot” and lauded the detective’s quick action and exceptional aim.

The Sun reported that the officer is believed to have 15 years of service with the NSW Police force. Investigations into the country’s deadliest mass shooting in three decades are still ongoing.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has denounced the mass shooting, which included a victim as young as 10, branding it as “an act of pure evil, an act of terror, an act of antisemitism.”

In a separate interview with ABC Sydney radio, he stated that Akram’s attack “was motivated by Islamic State ideology.”

He further suggested that evidence collected by investigators thus far indicates the gunmen had acted alone.

During a press conference on Tuesday 16 December, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon disclosed that the gunmen had abandoned a vehicle at the beach, which contained two “homemade” Islamic State group flags and improvised explosive devices. Officers are still striving to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

The crime scene at Bondi Beach is anticipated to remain sealed off until Wednesday 17 December afternoon. The state Premier emphasised that the police response following the attack should be commended.

They declared: “There are two officers in critical care in New South Wales hospitals at the moment. They weren’t shot in the back as they were running away. They were shot in the front.

“I’m sorry to be graphic about it, but if there is any suggestion that New South Wales police didn’t live up to their responsibilities to the people of this state, it should be rejected… and I think this rush to conclusions before all the facts are known, in my view, is disrespectful to their actions on Sunday.”
