‘Only I have made a 147, hole-in-one and nine-darter – one is harder’ | Other | Sport

The timeless argument has surfaced yet again. Which feat proves most challenging to accomplish? A 147 break, nine-darter or achieving a hole-in-one? For most people, managing just one of these accomplishments grants eternal boasting privileges, securing two borders on miraculous, and completing three remains virtually unprecedented.

However, snooker star Shaun Murphy insists he stands alone as the sole individual worldwide to have compiled a 147 break, hurled a nine-darter and struck a hole-in-one. A maximum snooker break represents standard territory for Murphy, who boasts 10 throughout his professional career.

Just three players have recorded more 147s than the Magician.

Eyebrows were certainly raised when Murphy declared he had not only added a golf course hole-in-one to his achievements, but also secured a nine-darter whilst positioned at the oche.

“That is true and, currently, I think it’s a club of one,” Murphy revealed to The NCG Golf Podcast.

“I don’t know anyone else who’s done all three.

“We did a funny Twitter poll because Wayne Mardle, the former pro darts player, is a good friend of mine and he’s a commentator on Sky now. We’ve played golf together and had a bit of banter and we always have the craic about what’s harder: is it the nine-darter or is it the 147?

“Now, obviously, it’s the 147. Anyone who says nine-darter needs to go and see a doctor immediately. But we have that bit of banter quite often and, the last time we did it, I think the hole-in-one got thrown in and it was, like, hang on a minute, I’ve done all three.

“I’ve only had one hole-in-one and I’ve only had one nine-darter but as I sit here talking to you, I’m not aware of anyone else who’s done all three. People can send their applications in any way they want. There’s lots of room to join the club.”

Murphy’s remarkable achievements faced scrutiny last year when Paddy Power assembled professionals from snooker, darts and golf for a two-hour challenge to settle the debate once and for all.

No hole-in-one materialised, whilst Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen both failed to register a nine-darter.

Murphy beamed with delight as he compiled a maximum break alongside Mark Williams.

However, sharing the same venue as the darting legends, Murphy’s assertions were tested when he was invited to approach the oche.

This time it was Van Gerwen’s turn to smile as Murphy struck a solitary four before missing the board entirely, though he subsequently insisted his wayward attempt was merely a “joke” but nobody appreciated “the funny side of it”.

Paddy Power have brought more pros together today, with Luca Brecel and Kyren Wilson also joining Murphy at the snooker table, while Jonny Clayton is competing alongside Humphries and Van Gerwen.
