Passport Office reveals how millions can save £12.50 – get new passports in just 3 weeks | Personal Finance | Finance

Officials have revealed a simple way to cut costs when applying for a passport, urging people to check how they apply.

Those who use the online system instead of paper forms can save money and even receive their passports faster. Millions of people hoping to renew their travel documents can save themselves £12.50 by submitting their passport applications online rather than by post.

His Majesty’s Passport Office has reminded applicants that opting for the digital application route can save both time and money, with the majority of applicants receiving their new passport within three weeks.

The cost difference is also huge: adults pay £94.50 when applying online, while others pay £107 when completing and posting their paper form.

In a post on X, the Passport Office shared: “It’s cheaper and easier to apply for your passport online! You’ll usually get your passport within 3 weeks using our standard service. Our processing time starts from when we receive your documents.”

You can apply for a new passport, renew an existing one, request a replacement or update your details through the Government’s online application system. Payments are accepted via debit or credit card.

Children’s passports are also cheaper online, with the applicant paying £61.50, compared to £74 if completed by post.

According to MoneySavingExpert, 7 million Brits managed to save last year by taking advantage of online options.

The Passport also offers expedited services for those who require urgent travel documents, including a same-day Premium option that costs £222 for adults and £189 for children.

Alternatively, the one-week Fast Track service costs £178 for an adult passport and £145 for a child’s passport.

Those who would like to use online savings but do not feel comfortable with online systems can use the Check and Send service at Post Offices.

Staff will take a digital photograph and guide applicants through the online process for an additional fee.

Traditional paper forms remain available from Post Office branches, though these require longer processing times and applicants must provide their own photographs. A paper-based Check and Send service is also available for those who prefer filling out a form, but at an extra cost.

The Passport Office advises checking current processing times before submitting any application.
