One horse that seems to have a lot going for him is Bargain-buy Hewick, who is aiming for a dream victory. The story of John ‘Shark’ Hanlon’s extraordinary €850 purchase is already a part of racing legend – but if the small 10-year-old manages to achieve his greatest moment at Aintree, the celebrations will be unrivalled.
In the modern-day National, class often prevails, and Hewick – who started his journey to fame in the Durham National at Sedgefield in autumn 2021 and has also won the American Grand National – certainly has plenty of it.
Gavin Sheehan, who rode to King George glory at Kempton Park on Boxing Day 2023, is back in the saddle for the Merseyside marathon. The race will see defending champion I Am Maximus, trained by Willie Mullins, among the 34 declarations for Saturday’s showpiece.
Despite two lacklustre runs this year, jockey Paul Townend remains loyal to the nine-year-old, who won by seven-and-a-half lengths last year. Mullins has a total of six runners, including Nick Rockett, Grangeclare West and Meetingofthewaters.
Fellow Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell also has a strong hand with ante-post favourite Stumptown joined by Vanillier and Perceval Legallois.
