Poll: Should Meghan and Harry return to UK? | Royal | News

Prince Harry’s battle for automatic taxpayer-funded police protection when he and his family visit the UK has fuelled speculation the Sussexes are eyeing a return to this country. The Duke of Sussex has secured a review of the decision to strip him of armed police protection, made in the aftermath of his and Meghan Markle‘s choosing to step back from royal life.

Newsweek’s Chief Royal Correspondent, Jack Royston, has asked if the security review suggested Harry was planning “some kind of a move” back to the UK or more time in the country or return to royal duties.

Royal reporter Bronte Coy told The Sun‘s Royal Exclusive show the review represents a “very dramatic U-turn”. She asked: “Are we moving towards clearing the path for Harry to be more involved in the UK and the Royal Family?”

Royal experts have suggested a number of reasons why Harry would want to spend more time in the UK. These include being physically closer to his father, King Charles, who has been undergoing treatment for cancer, and a wish for his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to be educated in Britain.

A return to the UK could help the King if Harry and Meghan were to pitch in as working royals again, given the size of the working Royal Family. However, a proposal the pair could be part-time royals made during negotiations over their future when they announced they were stepping down was reportedly rejected by Queen Elizabeth II at the time.

Royal commentator, Afua Hagan, told Newsweek: “I don’t think they will move back to Britain. I just don’t think it’s on their radar. I think they want to have the option to come back and visit family, absolutely.”

She told the publication Harry “definitely” wants to have those family bonds with King Charles and his brother Prince William and for the Sussex children to have ties with their cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Ms Hagan suggested Meghan wants this for Harry as well, but the royal expert said she could not see the Sussexes taking up any permanent role as working royals within the Royal Family.
