Popular cruise line bans unexpected item on all its cruise ships | Cruise | Travel
One major cruise company has recently added a surprising item to its list of forbidden items. MSC Cruises has updated its policy now banning the use of smart glasses in public areas on board its ships. Smart glasses capable of recording or transmitting video or audio, such as Meta’s Ray-Bans, are growing in popularity.
However, MSC has banned them in public spaces on board due to concerns about guest privacy and onboard security. The rule does not mean passengers are completely banned from bringing smart glasses with them. Guests may still pack the devices, but their use is limited to private cabins, non-public areas and times when guests are ashore.
If smart glasses are used in public spaces such as pools, lounges, dining areas, or theaters, security staff may confiscate the device.
The restriction on smart glasses applies to all brands and models.
The policy reads: “Devices capable of covertly or discreetly recording or transmitting data (e.g. smart glasses) are not allowed in ships public areas.”
MSC also told USA Today: “Smart glasses and similar devices are listed among prohibited items to ensure our security teams can intervene and confiscate the device if misuse occurs.
“This measure is in place solely to protect the privacy and safety of all guests and crew.”
Other prohibited items include alcohol, firearms, sharp objects, flammable materials, and anything with open flames or heating elements, though hair dryers, irons, and straighteners are allowed.
Inflatable beds and rafts cannot be used onboard but are permitted at destination ports. Illegal drugs and other controlled substances are banned, with violations potentially leading to confiscation, denial of boarding, or reporting to authorities.
Food and beverages must adhere to company guidelines, with only dry, packaged, or commercially produced items permitted. Finally, drones can be brought onboard but must remain stored in cabins, as using them on the ship is strictly forbidden.
Guests are responsible for complying with local drone regulations when off the ship, and MSC Cruises assumes no liability for confiscated drones or incidents related to their use.
