Prince Harry and Meghan Markle given ‘two choices’ by King Charles when leaving UK | Royal | News
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly given two choices by King Charles, the then Prince of Wales, when they announced they wanted to move to America.
In a report by the Byline Times, the King, 75, reportedly told his youngest son that the couple could either continue to be in the “safety tent” of Britain or be “cast away and castigated as comprehensively as possible”.
According to the report, the ultimatum was aimed at reducing “the threat of them eclipsing the royal family.”
However, Prince Harry then said in his bombshell memoir Spare, which was released last year, that neither he nor Meghan expected to lose their security when they left life as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020.
In Spare, the duke, 40, said the family lost their security as provided by the palace, which he believes made them vulnerable. He also said that he believed the palace would keep its “implicit promise” to maintain it, however this was not the case once they left the UK.
Harry is now believed to be paying for his own security to protect himself, his wife and their two young children Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, in Montecito, where the family own a mansion.
Neighbours of the couple said the duke is often seen out with his security guards, including when he is out on bike rides.
Richard Mineards, who lives near to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, told The Telegraph that Harry is only seen walking on the beach, riding his bike, or occasionally heading out to dinner.
The prince is reportedly always accompanied by his security wherever he goes.
