Putin brought back to global stage as he’s ‘invited to join Gaza Peace Council’ | World | News

Vladimi Putin has been invited to join a US-led “Peace Council” for Gaza, the Kremlin has claimed. According to the Russian officials, Putin is currently going through the proposal before making any final decision.

Russia’s statement is understood to refer to the Board of Peace being set by the US to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, among other matters. US President Donald Trump is to chair the organisation’s executive board, with other members thought to include Sir Tony Blair. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Putin had “received an invitation through diplomatic channels to join this Peace Council”.

He said: “At the moment, we are studying all the details of this proposal and hope to have contacts with the American side to clarify all the nuances.”

Around 60 countries have been invited by the US President to join the Board of Peace, however, the permanent membership will be available to those who pay $1bn (£747 million).

Sir Keir Starmer is said to be one of several global leaders who have been asked to join the board. On Monday, he expressed support for the United States as it works on the second phase of the ceasefire proposal.

The UK PM said: “We welcome President Trump’s focus on sustaining the ceasefire in Gaza and moving on to phase two. We are open to participating constructively in such efforts.”

Earlier on Monday, Kazakhstan’s president also agreed to join the board, his spokesperson said, joining Hungary and Vietnam, which had confirmed their involvement over the weekend.
