Rachel Reeves’ 60 new changes to try and revive UK economy and cut red tape | UK | News

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to unveil 60 new measures to boost economic growth. She will meet with regulators today (Monday, March 17) to finalise plans to make it easier to do business in the UK.

It comes after the Government announced the abolition of NHS England last week, with Health Secretary Wes Streeting saying the move was the “beginning not the end”. They will now confirm plans to streamline environmental regulatory processes and cut trade union red tape that blocks new housing and infrastructure.

Reeves is set to meet eight regulators including Natural England the Environment Agency today. She said: “Today we are taking further action to free businesses from the shackles of regulation. By cutting red tape and creating a more effective system, we will boost investment, create jobs and put more money into working people’s pockets.”

The chancellor is expected to announce regulatory changes for major projects such as the Lower Thames Crossing and the future expansion of Heathrow. She will also confirm 60 regulator-agreed measures in a bid to revive the economy.

These include reviewing the £100 cap on contactless payments, fast-tracking new medicines, simplifying mortgage lending rules, and helping international financial services to navigate regulations. Plans to allow at least two more large drone-flying trials are also expected to be announced, which the Government said has already cut travel times for blood samples between hospitals from 30 minutes down to two minutes.

After the bombshell move on NHS England, the Government has also announced plans to fold the Payments Systems Regulator. Reeves is also expected to fold the Community Interest Companies into Companies House.

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said: “Rachel Reeves has nine days until her emergency budget, where the Conservatives are calling on her to set out a real plan for growth.”
