Rashford told Man Utd position is waiting for him after Barcelona action | Football | Sport

Manchester United have been urged to retain Marcus Rashford and deploy him on the left flank next season, amid growing uncertainty surrounding his long-term prospects at Barcelona. The forward is on a season-long loan spell at the Catalan club from United.

The agreement between United and Barcelona includes a £26 million purchase option. However, doubts have emerged over whether the Spanish giants will activate it, with some reports indicating they may instead try to negotiate a reduced fee.

Former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has now called upon the club to hand the forward a fresh opportunity under the new management, identifying the ideal position for the 28-year-old. Speaking to TNT Sports, Hargreaves said: “I think, obviously, Marcus has done brilliantly at Barcelona, but again, I’d love to see him on the left-hand side [at United].

“That’s probably the only spot where I think there’s a bit of space for somebody in that left-wing position. I think Marcus would suit brilliantly.”

He added: “Sometimes the change of scenery is good for both, but I’d love to see him.” I just love watching Marcus play, and he’s an academy boy.

“The climate’s different now, so he might thrive in that as well. I hope he stays, but I can understand if he doesn’t as well.”

Rashford has enjoyed a productive campaign with Barcelona, netting 10 goals and providing 13 assists across 39 appearances in all competitions. He has, however, increasingly found himself introduced from the bench in recent matches.

Rashford himself has already made his desires regarding a permanent switch to Barca abundantly clear. “[I want to stay for] as many [seasons] as possible. We will see,” he told TNT Sports back in October. “I have to focus on trying to do my job and trying to help the team in whichever way I can.”

He added: “I’m learning a lot, it’s a new style of football. But it’s making me a better player. Honestly, it’s an amazing experience. I’ve always been a huge admirer of Barcelona, every player my age has watched them play, it’s amazing football.”
