Safest country in the world to retire has amazing healthcare and is ‘spectacular’ | Travel News | Travel

As the cost of living soars in the UK, many Britons are dreaming of escaping to warmer climes. But which country is the safest for expat retirees? According to research from the financial experts at Penfold, the safest country to retire is New Zealand.

New Zealand scored far better than the UK when it comes to safety and overall happiness levels. Laidback and relaxed, New Zealand offers an incredible lifestyle with plenty of nature to explore.

One of New Zealand’s top-rated attractions is Milford Sound, a fiord on the country’s South Island. A visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “Well worth the trip! Milford Sound is spectacular! Saw penguins and seals.”

New Zealand has some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes and expats will be able to keep fit on weekly hikes. More adventurous Britons could try their hand at white water rafting or even take up paragliding. Kayaking is another popular activity which helps to keep New Zealanders some of the healthiest people in the world.

New Zealand is a very safe country with low levels of violent crime, mugging and general theft. Expats will have to watch out for liquor ban areas where drinking alcohol is punishable by a fine.

British expats won’t struggle with driving laws in New Zealand as the country also drives on the left.

New Zealand has one of the world’s best healthcare systems and was ranked the best destination for retirees when it came to medical care.

The majority of expats in New Zealand live in one of the country’s cities to be close to essential services. One of the best cities for retirees is Christchurch as it is safe and has a lower cost of living than other major cities. Located on South Island, Christchurch is perfect for cyclists with many bike paths along the banks of the river.

The city also has a lot of green spaces and an English style square which will help expats to feel at home. One of the best things to do is visit Christchurch Botanic Gardens. It is the top thing to do on Tripadvisor with travellers rating it a 4.5 out of five stars.

One traveller said: “This is one of my personal favourite places in Christchurch! It is beautiful, there’s so much to see and do, lots of trees for kids to play in, cafes to sit and relax in.

“September through to November is my personal favourite time to go and walk around because it is Spring and the rose garden blooms early November! Lovely to walk around in.”

Another commented: “The botanic gardens were great to see. What I loved about the park the most was the beautiful trees throughout.”

A third added: “Enjoyed simply strolling around and discovering the variety of plants and trees. Small but pleasant cactii and orchid exhibitions. The visitors centre and cafe looked good.”

Meanwhile, New Zealand has a temperate climate and temperatures vary across the country with skiing possible in some areas.

The driest weather is found in the east of the country while the warmest weather is in the north. Despite the positives, British expats in New Zealand will be a long way away from family in the UK. Flights can be very expensive and Britons will need to factor that into any decision to relocate.
