Sainsbury’s has revealed the locations where its in-store cafes will be replaced. The British retailer is just one of the supermarkets which previously announced the closure of its in-store cafes, along with the likes of Morrisons and M&S.

However, customers will soon have Costa Coffee stores in their local Sainsbury’s in 10 locations. Four Costa Coffee cafes have already opened inside Sainsbury’s stores in the UK.

A spokesperson for the British coffee chain, which already has more than 2,700 cafes across the country, said that it is “excited to continue expanding Costa Coffee’s presence across the UK, bringing more welcoming cafe spaces into Sainsbury’s supermarkets for shoppers to relax, unwind, and enjoy a great cup of coffee”.

Sainsbury’s closed all 61 of its cafes in January 2025, leading to the loss of thousands of jobs. The supermarket blamed this decision on “a particularly challenging cost environment”, revealing that most customers did not use the cafes.

Four Sainsbury’s stores have already got a new Costa Coffee cafe inside since the beginning of the year. They are:

  • Monks Cross
  • Springfield (Chelmsford)
  • Thanet West Wood Cross
  • Pepper Hill (Gravesend)

Meanwhile, ten more are set to open. The Sainsbury’s locations that will receive new in-store Costa Coffee cafes are:

  • Swindon, Bridgemead
  • Newport
  • Nantwich
  • Durham
  • Plymouth, Marsh Mills
  • Stanway
  • Kelso
  • Denton
  • Darlington
  • Livingston

The Swindon, Newport, Nantwich and Durham Costa Coffees are expected to open in February, while the rest are planned for March. Sainsbury’s and Costa are planning to open up to 30 cafes by the summer.

The new openings follow more than 1,000 Costa Express machines, which have been placed in Sainsbury’s stores and petrol stations as part of the partnership.

“Each new store is designed to enhance the supermarket experience, offering customers a warm, inviting space to take a break, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy their favourite Costa Coffee,” the spokesperson added.

“Our collaboration with Sainsbury’s is all about making great coffee accessible to more people than ever before, and we’re excited to keep growing this journey together.”

Sainsbury’s recently announced its new strategy for “Next Level Sainsbury’s”, where it will be prioritising food, Nectar card, and convenience to boost profits.

Chief executive Simon Roberts claimed the plan is “just at the beginning of rediscovering quite what this business is capable of”. As part of this, Sainsbury’s has halved the prices of more than 30 selected dairy, fruit and vegetable items through Nectar Prices, from January 25 to February 1, in selected supermarkets and online.

The supermarket has made a number of major changes in the past couple of years. In early 2025, it confirmed that 3,000 jobs would be axed from its headquarters. It said the jobs were cut in a bid to streamline the business.

It also axed all remaining patisserie, bakery, rotisserie and pizza counters in its larger branches. However, some of these items were moved to other sections of the supermarket.
