Samsung gives you a cheaper way to own an ‘entry-level’ Galaxy S24
It’s been eight months since Samsung released the Galaxy S24, S24 Plus and S24 Ultra, but it seems as though three phones is not enough. Just as it has done for the past four years, the tech giant has just announced a fourth Galaxy S phone to join the original releases, and this one is predictably called the Galaxy S24 FE.
Standing for ‘fan edition’, the FE phones are slightly cheaper versions of the regular and Plus versions of the Galaxy S, with the S24 FE costs £649. That’s £150 less than the regular S24 but the FE has the same 6.7-inch screen size as the larger S24 Plus.
The displays are different though, and the FE cuts some specs corners to reach the lower price. The display is less power efficient than the ones on the regular S24s, and it uses the Exynos 2400e chipset, as opposed to the full-fat 2400 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
The FE’s design is also a little chunkier and less refined, with a flat glass back and flat aluminium sides. It retains triple camera lenses and a 50MP main camera sensor, with a 12MP ultrawide and 8MP 3x optical telephoto lens. You also get a generous 4,700mAh battery that should keep things ticking into a second day, plus a choice of blue, graphite, mint or yellow models.
This wouldn’t be a phone released in 2024 if there wasn’t AI involved, and just like with all of Samsung phones released this year, Galaxy AI is front and centre.
“We are committed to offering everyone the chance to experience the transformative power of Galaxy AI,” said Annika Bizon, Director of Marketing, MX Division at Samsung.
“Our new S24 FE underlines this commitment, giving more users the opportunity to enjoy a premium mobile experience, designed to unlock next-level creativity and enhance productivity.”
You’ll get handy tools such as Circle to Search that lets you Google search any image on your phone screen, through to generative AI that lets you erase or move objects in images, an interpreter for language translation, a composer that can change the tone of your texts before you send them, and other stuff that you can completely ignore and not use if you don’t want to.
One perk is that the S24 FE gets seven years of software and security updates, just like all the more expensive Galaxy devices. This means with some care (and probably a battery change at some stage) you could use this phone until 2031 and it would still be up to date. It comes with Android 14 out the box and could end up on Android 21.
£649 gets you 128GB storage, or you can pay £50 more and get 256GB for £699. All versions are available to buy now from Samsung’s UK website.
