Seven supporters of Greek football club PAOK were killed in a minibus crash in Romania while travelling to a Europa League match at Lyon, Greece’s government confirmed on Tuesday. “Deeply shaken, I was informed of the tragic accident in Romania that cost the lives of seven young compatriots,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
“The Greek government and our embassy are in close coordination with the local authorities, providing every possible form of support. In these difficult moments, together with all Greeks, I extend my sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and to the PAOK community. We all share the hope that the injured will recover quickly. Our thoughts are with them.”
PAOK maintained direct contact with the government, coordinating assistance for families and wounded supporters, and dispatching club representatives to Romania.
PAOK president Ivan Savvidis described it as “an unspeakable tragedy,” adding that “I am devastated by the unjust loss of young people, fans of our beloved team, who travelled to stand by our PAOK.
“I mourn with the families and millions of our compatriots,” Savvidis said.
Meanwhile, supporters’ groups for rival clubs Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, Aris, and others released messages of solidarity and sympathy.
The fixture in France is scheduled for Thursday.
In a statement, Lyon offered its “sincere condolences” to PAOK and confirmed a tribute would be held during Thursday’s match at Groupama Stadium.
Romania’s fire service said in a statement: “Around 1.05pm we were called to respond to a traffic accident on the E70, near the village of Lugoj.
“A first aid vehicle, an extrication vehicle, a fire engine and personnel transport vehicles immediately dispatched to the scene.”
Air ambulances could not reach the scene due to adverse weather conditions, according to the Romanian Civil Protection.
An investigation into the collision has been opened.
