Sisu Road to Revenge review – New WW2 action movie is Mad Max meets Looney Tunes | Films | Entertainment
Three years ago, a small independent Finnish action thriller hit cinemas and went on to top the Netflix film chart.
Dubbed as ‘John Wick vs the Nazis’, Sisu followed a Finnish Army commando taking on a Waffen-SS platoon during World War 2.
And now its long-awaited sequel arrives in cinemas this weekend with Aatami Korpi facing off against the Soviet Red Army this time around.
Set in 1946, the commando turned gold prospector returns home to Communist-occupied Karelia, where his family were murdered.
Dismantling his wooden house log by log, Jorma Tommila’s silent lead loads up his home onto a truck before driving back to free Finland to rebuild it.
The only probably is, Stephen Lang’s cruel Russian officer, who killed Korea’s family, is now hunting him down, having been ordered to assassinate the legendary commando.
What transpires is a Mad Max: Fury Road-style hunt, complete with Wile E Coyote and Road Runner-level antics (and a lack of dialogue) that have the viewer laughing amid the spectacle. Although there are some Fast and Furious meets Looney Tunes gravity-defying stunts, this is still an explosive blood fest in the spirit of its predecessor. At one point, this Finnish John Wick – who takes blow after blow – escapes capture and makes his way carriage by carriage through a moving train, delivering some of the best edge-of-your-seat action in cinema for a long time.
Sisu 2 doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original, but there’s still plenty here for action fans to enjoy. Here’s hoping for a third outing to complete this hidden gem series.
Sisu: Road to Revenge is out in cinemas on Friday.
