Sonos is back on track with two new speakers that offer plenty of surprises

It’s been a torrid time for Sonos. The firm’s relaunched app caused its fair share of misery back in 2024, with users complaining of severe issues, including connectivity problems and frequent crashes. Some even considered selling their entire speaker setup and switching to rival systems, such as Apple’s HomePods. “I’ve actually never seen anything NOT work like your app in my lifetime. It’s so frustrating I want to sell all of my Sonos speakers,” said one user named Billy

Things have since improved, and the company now appears to be back on track, with two new speakers arriving this month, including one perfect for indoor and outdoor use.

The Sonos Play can connect to your home’s Wi-Fi to deliver the usual Sonos multi-room experience. But thanks to its built-in battery, it can then be unplugged and taken out on the road.

It features a neat carry handle for added convenience and can last for an impressive 24 hours on a single charge. That will be ample to keep the beach party going all day and long into the night.

It’s also waterproof so can survive the British weather and can even be used a power bank to refill your smartphone. For the first time, Sonos is also allowing its speakers to be grouped together via Bluetooth. That means you link up a bunch of these boomboxes and create your very own mini-festival.

Along with the Sonos Play, there’s also a speaker that’s a little kinder on the wallet. The Era 100 SL offers a simplified and more accessible way to enter the Sonos experience.

It gets punchy sound, links to other Sonos devices and features a smart design all at a lower price.

“We believe the first speaker you bring home should sound complete on its own, and become even better as your Sonos system grows,” said Chris Kallai, VP of Product Creation at Sonos.

“Sonos Play and Era 100 SL offer two distinct ways to shape a listening experience that fits how people actually live, while making it simple to add new rooms, new moments, and new possibilities over time.

Sonos Play and Sonos Era 100 SL are available now for pre-order at sonos.com, with them arriving in stores from March 31.

The Era 100 SL costs £169, whilst the portable Sonos Play will set you back £299.
