Several Spanish regions are facing the extreme weather, including Barcelona, Zaragoza, Girona, Tarragona and Castellon.
In the popular tourist town of Tarazona in Zaragoza, more than 100 millimetres of rain fell in just one hour. The resultant flooding has caused significant disruption to public transport.
In most parts of Aragon and Catalonia, significant rainfall caused heavy flooding and led to the overflowing of ravines.
Catalonia, Aragon and the Valencian Community are set to be the worst-affected areas, as intense rain was predicted to begin early today.
According to Catalan News, the Catalan weather service Meteocat has issued its own highest possible weather warning, at levels five and six. This replaces the previous orange and yellow warnings in place.
