Steven Gerrard makes Liverpool offer and reveals true thoughts on Arne Slot | Football | Sport
Steven Gerrard has declared his unwavering commitment to Liverpool, offering to accept any role at the club whilst throwing his support behind current manager Arne Slot. The former Reds skipper’s challenging tenure at Aston Villa from November 2021 was followed by an 18-month stint with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq, which concluded in January. Despite remaining without a managerial position and being heavily tipped for a sentimental return to Rangers, the 44-year-old has been focusing on punditry duties.
When questioned about his aspirations to manage Liverpool during a recent interview, Gerrard was refreshingly candid. In comments relayed by the Liverpool Echo, he told TNT Sports’ ‘Ally’s Social Club’: “I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I’d help them with anything.”
Nevertheless, the former England midfielder demonstrated his integrity by making clear that he harbours no desire to see Arne Slot relieved of his duties.
He emphasised: “I don’t want Arne Slot to lose his job. I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great.
“I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league. I’m a Liverpool fan.
“I want the best for Liverpool but if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I’ll be there for them.”
Liverpool’s fortunes have been turning around as of late. Their recent triumph over Tottenham marked their third victory in five games, propelling them to fifth place in the Premier League table.
Gerrard also reflected on his managerial stint at Villa, which concluded in October 2022 following a defeat to Fulham that left the club perilously close to the drop zone.
Reflecting on the challenges he faced, he confessed: “Going into the second season, I’m thinking we’ve taken Villa from 17th to seventh, eighth, ninth. We’re in a good place.
“We’ve made three or four really strong signings. Let’s go for top ten, maybe have a go at the League Cup. If Europe happens, brilliant.
“We started the season really badly. We lost 2–0 to Bournemouth. We were poor – tactically poor, players didn’t turn up – and it was a shock result.
“We bounced back against Everton, won 1–0, steadied it a bit. But when we lost momentum towards the end of October, I didn’t feel like I could pull it back.
“I felt like I’d changed the dynamics and upset too many people in the dressing room too quickly, and that hurt me a lot.”
